Search engine marketing is the goal of getting traffic or business from all the search engines out there , whether it is for long term or short terms goals. Short term goals would be making successful pay per click campaigns and long term goals would be getting a site on the first page of Google's organic search . The first and second page on google for certain keywords and key phrases pulls alot of weight when it comes to getting massive targeted traffic to your websites. In other words if you have any business you need a website and if you already have a website your obviously in need of organic search engine traffic . There are many powerful ways to help your website get on the first couple pages of google, I would not suggest any black hat forms of search engine optimization as they will hurt you more then help you in the long run. You should rather focus on making a great impression by focusing on search engines such as Google , Yahoo and Msn as these 3 search engines pull in the most traffic online. These three search engines are also critical to other smaller search engines for their search results that they control up to 90% of all searched traffic on the internet.



The two forms of search engine marketing that are clearly above the rest are Pay Per Click (ppc) and search engine optimization. Many places offer pay per click advertising like Google , Yahoo Overture , Bidvertiser , Msn , Adbrite , Facebook , Myspace and many many more.


The huge advantage to Pay Per Click advertising is the immediate rushes of traffic to your website . Often setting up a campaign is a great way to test your website to see how well it is converting . Unlike being on Google's first page getting free organic traffic , with pay per click you really have to watch what your doing . If you don't know what your doing you can burn a hole in your pocket really quick . Make sure you are getting a greater return on your investment or switch your campaign by trying different key phrases . Remember most keywords nowadays are really competitive and will cost you a ton in pay per click money , I would suggest doing some keyword research and finding some long tailed key phrases that will be less competitive. The more words in a search criteria the farther along the person is in the buying process , an example of this would be searching Google for "running shoes" and "new nike running shoes 2008" , it is pretty obvious that the first search is going to be really competitive and at the same time its not that narrow of a search . The second term is going to be far less competitive and also will give you good pay per clicks as the customer is further along in the buying process . With all this said be careful with pay per click marketing and don't solely rely on it , make sure you spend some time optimizing your website so you eventually get organic traffic which will benefit you more in the long run.



Search engine optimization is the most effective means of marketing online , once you reach the first and second pages for targeted keywords or key phrases you will be getting more traffic then you did from pay per clicks free. Keep in mind search engine optimization takes alot of time ,so stick with it and you will be very happy in the long run.
