Learning any martial arts style is first and foremost a physically demanding activity. Having said that, it should not deter you from your goal. After all, getting in good physical shape is a healthy thing to do.
Here are the five steps to selecting the right style:
1. Consult with your doctor before beginning any exercise program.
2. Assess your physical condition. If you have any limitations that might affect your ability to practice a certain martial arts style, take that into consideration before making your decision.
3. Watch practitioners from the various styles before making your decision. Many schools have an observation area that allows you to watch while a class is being taught. Ask permission first.
4. Decide whether you can visualize yourself learning to perform the techniques within a style. If not, consider another style.
5. Summarize the information you have learned and match your preferences to a martial arts style that supports your physical state and long-term interest.
Some important factors to evaluate include hard-style versus soft-style training. Hard-style tends to be more physically intense. Examples of hard-style are karate and tae kwon do. Soft-style training tends to be less physically challenging. Therefore, soft styles are more suited to older students and those with physical limitations. Examples include aikido and tai chi.
Remember that practicing martial arts can be dangerous, so exercise caution. Talk to people that have experience studying martial arts and get their suggestions. Make sure to talk to several people who have learned different style so that no one person influences your decsion too much.
