It is a known fact that thing in any business is a process. Whether it is selling a product or service, receipt of order and execution thereof, or scheduling manufacture of a product, packing and dispatch to customers and finally receiving payments. When any department has any problem in their processes they have to understand which Six Sigma methods needs to be employed for fix the problems being currently faced by them. To take such a decision we need to understand the similarities and differences between the DMAIC and DMADV methodologies. Let’s look at the similarities in both the DMAIC and DMADV methodologies. Both these methods strive to achieve the Six Sigma benchmark of driving the defects to below 3.4 out of a million opportunities. Both the methodologies use data based solutions and it must be understood clearly that Six Sigma only understands cold and hard facts and has no place for any kind of intuition. Both the techniques are usually implemented by green belt holders and supervised by the black belts and the master black belts. Both the methodologies are ways to reach financial bottom line numbers. These are implemented using the support of a Six Sigma champion and the owner of the process. Now we must understand the major differences between DMAIC and DMADV techniques. Both are Six Sigma methodologies but are quite different in use. These are methods to be used in different circumstances and aimed at achieving different goals. The first stage involves definition of the project goals and defines the customer deliverables both internal and external. The similarities end here. The second stage involved in DMAIC is measurement of the current performance where as the DMADV measures the customer specifications and their needs. The third stage in DMAIC analyses the chief causes of the defects where as the DMADV analyses the options of the processes which are required to meet the needs of the customer. The forth stage of DMAIC involves improvements of the processes aiming at elimination of all defects where as the DMADV involved designing processes to meet the needs of the customers. The fifth and the last stage in DMAIC involved the controlling go all future performance of all processes where as the DMADV requires verification of the designed performance and the ability to meet the needs of the customer.
